Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-manipulative, hands-on
technique which is used to treat a wide range of problems.
CST encourages the body's natural healing mechanisms to improve the operation of the central nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health and strengthen resistance to disease.
It acts on the craniosacral system, a body system comprising the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid around the core of the nervous system.
This system surrounds, nourishes and protects the brain and spinal cord. Like the pulse of the cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body. Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a small coin, skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm anywhere on the body to pinpoint the source of a restriction or stress.
Once a source has been determined, the practitioner can assist the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct. This simple action is often all it takes to remove a restriction.
Craniosacral therapy acts on the deepest structures and organs of the nervous system, influencing motor, pain and co-ordination mechanisms, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function and the endocrine system and even the immune-system.
Receiving CST is a very relaxing, often pleasurable experience. It is as common for ignored problems to resolve as it is for those that the person seeks help for. For example improvements in the jaw or eyesight are often experienced by those presenting with spine-related issues.
The treatments may also help resolve emotional issues which can play a major role in inhibiting good physical health. This part of the treatment is also called SomatoEmotional Release.
